The Kingdom of Israel Splits

In our last story, we learned about how Solomon turned his heart away from God. In this story, we will learn how Solomon’s Kingdom will be divided into 10 tribes in the north under Jeroboam and 2 tribes in the south under Rehoboam, as inspired by 1 Kings and 1 Chronicles.

1 Kings 12:6
In today's tale, we're introduced to two individuals: Jeroboam and Rehoboam. Jeroboam, often referred to as JB, was promised the rule over ten tribes of Israel by a prophet. On the other hand, Rehoboam, or RB, was the son of Solomon and the newly anointed king. Faced with a critical decision, RB sought counsel from both experienced and youthful advisors. Sadly, he followed the unwise advice of his peers, which resulted in the division of the kingdom into Israel and Judah. Jeroboam, however, made a wiser choice to prevent a devastating conflict with RB. This story reminds us of the importance of seeking wise counsel, just as Jesus promised the Holy Spirit as our Counselor.
